Welcome from the chair

Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BMEN) at the University of North Texas (UNT)! The youngest department in the College of Engineering!

Our department is committed to educating and creating well-rounded, knowledgeable, biomedical engineers who are passionate about improving the quality of life for people in Texas, the United States and the world.

With our populations aging and our brave veterans returning from wars, there is an increasing need for qualified biomedical engineers who can alleviate problems by conceptualizing, designing, creating and validating state of the art medical devices, processes and software.

Our unique undergraduate curriculum prepares our students for the challenges that lie before them, thus enabling them to be competitive in today’s job market. We offer a 3-in-1 degree. Our graduates will get a degree in Biomedical Engineering and will also have the option of getting 2 minors – one in mathematics and the other in another engineering discipline or Biology. We also offer a pre-medical track for future physicians wanting to get an engineering degree. Our graduate program is structured similarly to offer more options to our students. Our students – undergraduate and graduate, will have the opportunity to work with outstanding faculty, conducting innovative research in biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, nano-technology and biomechanics.

I started this department from my office in 2014. In 3 years, we have grown to over 230 students with a strong, diverse and vibrant undergraduate body that is over 42% female! The highest in the College of Engineering. We are adding more faculty and our enrollment continues to grow. Biomedical Engineering will move into a new building with dedicated research and teaching laboratories, in June 2019! These are exciting times for us and our students! Companies interested in recruiting high-quality biomedical engineers with breadth and depth of knowledge, will find an enthusiastic bunch of students that fit their requirements.

I invite you to explore our website and see what we have to offer. Whether you are a prospective student or parent, an industry or research representative, I encourage you to visit us at Discovery Park. Please feel free to contact me.

Go Mean Green! Go BMEN!

Sincerely,
