Competition

The Make-a-Thon is a competition in which participants have two days to design and prototype a medical device that solves a given clinical or medical challenge. The main purpose of the Make-a-Thon is to challenge engineering students to think creatively with what they have learned and to get a step closer in preparation for the professional world. The Make-a-Thon aims to provide engineering students with hands-on experience using CAD and the design process in preparation for their capstone senior design project. Students will have the opportunity to prototype their device using resources from the UNT Biomedical Engineering Department and the College of Engineering from the perspective of a collaboration of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Students will utilize 3D printing, computational modeling, instrumentation, and other prototyping techniques so that the teams will work to turn their designs into a functional device to present to industry professionals from the rapidly expanding DFW Medical Community. We hope to invite creative and passionate BME students in the North Texas region to compete and bring diverse perspectives.

​Main focus: Medical Device 3D printing design competition utilizing CAD and Solidworks to solve medical problems.

Requirements: Each team with 4-5 members MUST INCLUDE at least 1 freshman or sophomore.

Program

In this 2 day competition, groups of 4-5 will each be tasked with a medical problem. Each group will spend 13 hours to completely design and create a solution to provide the 3D-printed prototype. All engineering majors are welcome to compete (biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, materials science) – just bring your laptop for your own research!
